Winter Comforts

With the winter season soon winding to a close, this is a space to pause
and reflect on the comforts of the season. This has been a time to rest
and gestate, envision and prepare. It is a time of stillness but also of
potential. Here are some simple acts of kindness and tangible self care that
add a bit of warmth to the colder months.
Baking seasonal foods and brewing warm teas: During this season, I like to focus
on warming foods. Soups, breads and slow-cooker meals are regular go to-meals
during the winter months. One of my rituals has been making a chamomile loose
leaf tea with oat milk (and sometimes cinnamon) in the evenings. I love baking and the
aromatic spices in different breads and recipes are one of my favorite aspect of the colder
months: cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg, clove, etc.
Soft blankets and comfortable clothing: Simple, warm tactile comforts. These past
few months whenever I find myself outdoors on a particularly cold day, I am so
grateful for my soft, warm scarf. Focused on attention on what brings warmth.
Layers of soft blankets and pillows as props create space for deep and comfortable rest for yoga nidra practice.
Nature walks: Winter sunsets which can yield such incredible colors (lavender, pale yellow or deep red and orange skies), soft and dimming light, or watching snow fall. The quiet of nature is a beautiful part of walking in this season.
Candlelight: Another small comfort, and while not winter specific, there are so many wonderful
seasonal scents, like evergreen or pine that are so perfectly suited for this time of year. Just the
simple act of lighting a small candle when sitting down for a meal can provide a sense of abundance, comfort and care.
Deep rest: Rest is necessary any time of the year, but winter especially compatible for deep introspection and rest.
As the winter season draws to a close I hope you have found these months to be sweet and restful. Be on the lookout for upcoming Yoga Nidra workshops or feel free to sign up for a 1:1 session.
